Biology 101
The details of this week's WSR deal with what happens in the womb when a new human life is created. Just to refresh everyone's memory, the early stages of life consist of the following:
- At fertilization, the sperm and the egg join together. A new human person is created with its own set of chromosomes and its own DNA.
- The new human person travels through the fallopian tube and, five to seven days later, implants herself in the endometrial lining of her mother's uterus (current medical jargon calls this "conception," which is confusing because conception used to be synonymous with fertilization).
- Products that change or alter the endometrial lining can cause the new human person to be unable to implant and that person will then die.
- If the person is able to implant, and is left undisturbed, the new human person will grow and develop and will eventually be born.
What is a chemical abortion?
The 2006 copy of the Physicians Desk Reference arrived in the office recently. We thought you might like to read what this reference book has to say about the way that so-called contraceptive products work.
For readers not familiar with the PDR, it is published for physicians and other medical professionals and includes entries for most of the drugs prescribed in the United States today. According to the foreword of the PDR: "Each full length entry provides you with an exact copy of the product's FDA-approved or other manufacturer-supplied labeling."
Here are some of the descriptions (we added items in brackets and the italics):
Progestin-only contraceptives prevent conception [i.e., implantation] by suppressing ovulation in approximately half of users, thickening the cervical mucus to inhibit sperm penetration, lowering mid-cycle LH and FSH peaks, slowing the movement of the ovum through the fallopian tubes, and altering the endometrium. Combination oral contraceptives act by suppression of gonadotropins. Although the primary mechanism of this action is inhibition of ovulation, other alterations include changes in the cervical mucus, which increase the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus, and changes in the endometrium, which reduce the likelihood of implantation. Depo-Provera ® Contraceptive Injection when administered at the recommended dose to women every 3 months, inhibits the secretion of gonadotropins which, in turn, prevents follicular maturation and ovulation and results in endometrium thinning. These actions produce its contraceptive effect. (PDR © 2006, page 2620)
Plan B ® is believed to act as an emergency contraceptive principally by preventing ovulation or fertilization, by altering the tubal transport of sperm and/or ova. In addition, it may inhibit implantation by altering the endometrium. (PDR © 2006, page 1068)
You will recall that we documented, from Planned Parenthood's own data, in our December 14, 2005 edition of the WSR, that 64.6 percent of Planned Parenthood birth control customers buy one of the pills, injectables, patches or rings described above. And, as you now have read, according to the manufacturers, every one of these products works some of the time by inhibiting implantation, an action that will cause the death of an already created human person. These deaths are what we refer to when we use the term Chemical Abortion.
There are some, even in the pro-life movement, that dispute that these products cause the deaths of children in the womb. But the manufacturers, and, by its approval, the FDA, have no such qualms. They state clearly how these products work.
These products kill children.
What does this mean for our efforts?
The truth stated above will have a major impact on how we view Planned Parenthood and government programs. It means:
- When your local Planned Parenthood claims it does not do abortions, it is telling a lie. Every Planned Parenthood distributes these products, so every Planned Parenthood facility is an abortion facility.
- When politicians tell you that the Title X program does not fund abortions, they are telling you a lie. Every Title X recipient distributes some or all of the products listed above, so every Title X recipient is involved with abortions with taxpayer money.
- When corporations tell you they fund family planning programs, but do not fund abortion, they are telling you a lie. Every family planning program is involved in distributing these products that kill children.
STOPP calls on every pro-lifer, everywhere, to speak up fearlessly and tirelessly about the chemical abortions caused by these products. Doing so will not make you popular with many in your community, but you will have the knowledge that you boldly proclaim the truth in a world that doesn't want to hear the truth. And, remember that Christ tells us in Matthew, Chapter 10: "Whoever proclaims me before man, I will proclaim him before my Father in heaven," and "Whoever denies me before man, I will deny him before my Father in heaven."
Be a proclaimer of the truth and your reward will be eternal.

Contraceptives hurt women
In addition to causing the deaths of babies in the womb, these so-called contraceptives also hurt the women who take them. According to the manufacturers, women using combination contraceptives have been known to suffer from the following adverse effects, which include strokes and heart attacks:
- Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
- Thromboembolism and thrombotic disorders (thrombophlebitis, pulmonary embolism, cerebrovascular disorders, and retinal thrombosis)
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Stroke, including cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral thrombosis
- Hepatic neoplasia
- Gallbladder disease
- Death

New president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America
As we were putting the final touches on this week's WSR, the Board of Directors of PPFA announced it has selected a new president, who will take office in February. Her name is Cecile Richards. She is the daughter of Ann Richards, the former governor of Texas.

STOPP has issued the following press release in response to the announcement of Richards as the new president:
Planned Parenthood abandons health care pretenses,
lures radical political activist to lead organizationWASHINGTON, D.C. - "The appointment of Cecile Richards as president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America confirms that the organization's focus is not on health care, but rather on political advocacy," said Jim Sedlak, executive director of American Life League's STOPP International. "This appointment shows the Planned Parenthood board of directors has abandoned all pretenses that PPFA is a health care organization."
"Richards' entire background is that of political activism," said Sedlak, adding that Richards has absolutely no health care experience. "From her positions as a union organizer, to her work with the Texas Freedom Network and her leadership of America Votes, Richards has demonstrated that she is the consummate political mover who will stop at nothing to achieve her goal."
Sedlak said Planned Parenthood began to abandon its claim that it is a health care organization when it issued its Vision 2025 document in 2000. "The ten goals enumerated in the document had nothing to do with health care and everything to do with political activism. The appointment of such a radical political activist to head the organization is a logical compliment to that document.
"Planned Parenthood is already under fire for RU-486 deaths and its failure to report child predators," said Sedlak. "We can only imagine how much further its health care component will diminish under Richards.
"Now that Planned Parenthood has made its direction clear," Sedlak said, "we ask elected officials and the Department of Health and Human Services to withdraw all taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood, which amounted to over $250 million last year. We also ask all American women to seek medical treatment from real health care providers and not from this political advocacy group."
